West Champaran: Security has been significantly tightened along the India–Nepal border as authorities step up efforts to stop smuggling and the spread of illegal drugs. Officials say a special operation is now underway, with close monitoring of movements in border areas to prevent unlawful activities. The decision was reinforced during a meeting held on Thursday at the district collectorate, where senior officers reviewed the current situation and discussed stronger enforcement measures.
The meeting was chaired by District Magistrate Tarunjot Singh and included officials from the administration, police, and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Members of the National Coordination Centre (NCORD) also took part in the discussion. The focus remained on tackling drug trafficking and related crimes, which have become a growing concern in border regions. Authorities agreed that better coordination between agencies and regular operations are necessary to control illegal networks.
During the meeting, the district magistrate also directed officials to identify and remove encroachments on government land in border areas. He said clearing such land is important for development work and for maintaining better control in sensitive zones. At the same time, departments such as Jeevika, ICDS, education, and prohibition were asked to work together to raise awareness about drug addiction and encourage preventive action at the community level.
Financial monitoring was another key issue discussed. Officials were instructed to keep a close watch on suspicious bank transactions and report any unusual activity to the Reserve Bank of India and the police. The installation of machines to detect fake currency in ATMs was also considered important. In addition, strict action was ordered against fraud involving Aadhaar cards, including random checks at customer service point (CSP) centres and filing of cases against those found guilty.
Senior police officials highlighted the need to maintain strict surveillance over suspicious accounts, businesses, and individuals. They also called for the identification of foreign nationals living in border areas and for speeding up their repatriation process where required. The meeting ended with a clear message that authorities will continue to work together to strengthen security and reduce crime along the India–Nepal border.
