Indore/Patna: At least eight people have died and several others were injured after a fire broke out in a residential building in Indore early on Wednesday, reportedly triggered by an electric car being charged outside the house.
The incident occurred around 4 am in Greater Brijeshwar Colony, near Bengali Square, when a suspected short circuit caused the vehicle to catch fire. The flames quickly spread to a three-storey building, trapping residents inside as they slept.
According to police, six of those who died belonged to the same family, originally from Kishanganj. The victims included elderly residents as well as children, underscoring the scale of the tragedy.
Emergency services said the fire intensified after it spread to gas cylinders stored inside the house, triggering a series of explosions. The blasts caused part of the structure to collapse, complicating rescue efforts and increasing the number of casualties.
Firefighters were alerted soon after the blaze began, but officials said the speed and intensity of the fire left little time for those inside to escape. Several people sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the fire, though initial reports point to an electrical short circuit linked to the charging vehicle.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the area, with local residents describing scenes of panic as explosions rocked the neighbourhood.
