Patna: Instagram is preparing to roll out a new feature called “Instagram Instants”, aimed at encouraging more spontaneous and private photo sharing on the platform.
The feature will allow users to capture and send photos instantly through the app’s camera without using filters or selecting images from their phone galleries. Shared photos will disappear after being viewed once, marking a significant shift towards more temporary and authentic communication.
The move is widely viewed as Instagram’s response to the growing popularity of platforms such as BeReal and Snapchat, both of which emphasise casual, real-time interactions.
How Instagram Instants Works
Instagram Instants is designed as a camera-first feature. Once users tap the “Instant Sharing” option, the app immediately opens the camera interface, prompting them to take a photo in real time.
The feature does not allow access to previously saved images or editing tools. Users must share the image exactly as it is captured.
The company appears to be positioning the feature around authenticity rather than curated content, reflecting changing social media habits among younger users.
Available Inside Direct Messages
The feature is expected to appear within Instagram’s Direct Message section.
Users will reportedly see a dedicated “Instant Sharing” box that enables them to send photos privately to selected contacts. Unlike Stories or regular posts, these images will not appear on public profiles or feeds.
This indicates Instagram’s increasing focus on private communication and smaller social circles rather than broad public engagement.
Photos Disappear After One View
One of the feature’s main elements is its disappearing-photo function.
Recipients will be able to view a shared image only once before it vanishes automatically. Reports also suggest that unopened photos may expire after a certain period.
The approach mirrors features already used by Snapchat and other messaging platforms that prioritise temporary content.
Screenshot Restrictions Planned
Instagram is also expected to introduce privacy protections within Instants.
