Patna: Bihar’s “Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan,” a large-scale water conservation campaign, is showing significant results in efforts to raise the state’s groundwater levels. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Panchayati Raj Department has successfully renovated thousands of wells and constructed soak pits, improving water availability for irrigation and laying a foundation to address future water crises.
According to a departmental report, the state has completed the renovation of 25,254 wells out of a target of 25,466, a remarkable achievement of over 99%. Simultaneously, 18,895 soak pits have been built near wells, nearing the target of 19,542.
Districts Lead the Way in Water Conservation
The campaign has seen strong public participation, with several districts exceeding their targets. Nalanda district was at the forefront, fully completing its goal of 1,939 soak pits. Other districts like Arwal, Aurangabad, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, and Madhepura have also surpassed their set goals.
Panchayati Raj Department officials note that the initiative has created unprecedented public awareness about water conservation in rural areas. The government’s goal is to establish a robust water conservation system in every panchayat to prevent any future water-related crises.
