Patna: A potential train fire was averted on Monday after smoke erupted in a coach of the 13258 Down Jansadharan Express at Bihiya railway station in Bihar’s Bhojpur district, officials said. The incident triggered panic among passengers but was quickly brought under control by railway staff.
The train, operated under the Danapur railway division of Indian Railways, was travelling from Bihar towards Delhi when the incident occurred at around 3:05 PM.
Smoke Erupts Due to Brake Binding
According to railway officials, smoke began to emerge from a coach adjacent to the engine due to brake binding, a condition in which the braking system gets jammed and generates excessive heat through friction.
As the train reached Bihiya station, the smoke intensified and spread inside the coach, causing panic among passengers who raised alarm and attempted to move out as the train halted.
Eyewitnesses said faint smoke had first been noticed after the train crossed Banahi station, but the situation worsened by the time it arrived at Bihiya.
Emergency Response at Station
The loco pilot immediately stopped the train upon noticing the situation and informed railway control. Station officials, railway staff, and Railway Protection Force personnel reached the spot soon after.
Fire extinguishers sourced from the engine and the station premises were used to control the smoke and prevent escalation. After coordinated efforts, the situation was fully brought under control.
Railway officials confirmed that there were no injuries to passengers in the incident.
Preliminary Findings
Preliminary assessments suggest that brake binding in coach number 191134 (ECR) led to overheating and smoke generation. Officials said a detailed technical inspection will be carried out to determine the exact cause of the malfunction.
Railway authorities are expected to review maintenance protocols following the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
