Patna: The government has announced that Jeevika Didis women working at the forefront of rural self-help groups and welfare delivery will soon receive official identity cards, a step aimed at improving their safety, recognition and credibility during fieldwork. The announcement was made by Rural Development Minister Shrawon Kumar during proceedings in the legislative assembly on Wednesday.
The decision followed a short-notice question raised by legislator Snehlata, who emphasised the significant contribution of Jeevika workers in implementing government schemes at the village level. She argued that despite their growing responsibilities, many lacked formal identification, leaving them vulnerable while travelling or interacting with officials and residents. She urged the government to provide Aadhaar-linked identity cards and introduce a dress code to help establish their official status.
Responding to the query, Kumar said Jeevika Didis have already emerged as agents of social change, spreading awareness and supporting development initiatives across rural communities. He maintained that they are empowered and capable, and noted that the state’s emergency helpline 112 remains available to them, as it is to all citizens, in case of security concerns.
On the issue of identification and dress code, the minister initially said these matters fall within the jurisdiction of community organisations that manage the Jeevika programme, adding that the department would reiterate instructions to them. However, Snehlata expressed dissatisfaction with the response, arguing that formal state recognition was essential for both protection and accountability.
Assembly Speaker Dr Prem Kumar then intervened, advising the government to ensure that identity cards are issued. Accepting the recommendation, the minister agreed to implement the measure. The move is expected to benefit thousands of women associated with self-help groups across the state and is seen as another step towards strengthening grassroots governance and women’s empowerment.
