Patna: The Bihar State Road Development Corporation (BSRDC) has announced that the much-anticipated extension of the JP Ganga Path will be executed in two phases, with work set to begin in April. The project, costing Rs 5,500 crore, is expected to be completed within four years and will be maintained by the construction agency for 15 years.
The first phase involves the construction of a 17.65-kilometre at-grade road on the embankment, connecting Sherpur to Koilwar. Vishwa Samudra Engineering has been awarded the contract to begin work on this segment. The second phase will see the construction of an elevated four-lane road between Digha and Sherpur.
Officials said the accelerated schedule aims to avoid delays caused by the rainy season, which could halt construction of the pillars along the Ganges riverbank. Construction agencies have been instructed to complete financial closure by March, with physical work commencing immediately thereafter.
Once complete, the project is expected to bring significant relief to commuters, particularly during the monsoon months. The embankment road will allow uninterrupted vehicle movement, reduce traffic congestion between Koilwar and Bihta, and offer faster connections to Buxar, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. Vehicles are expected to travel at speeds of 100–120 km per hour along the route.
The extension will also improve accessibility to key towns in eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Ballia, Ghazipur, Mau, Azamgarh, Deoria, and Gorakhpur, making inter-state travel smoother and more efficient.
