Kaimur: Plans are underway to establish a new tiger reserve in Kaimur, following a significant rise in the state’s tiger population over the past decade. A formal proposal has been submitted to the Government of India, state Environment and Forest Minister Dr Sunil Kumar announced on International Tiger Day.
Speaking at a programme held at Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna, Dr Kumar highlighted the state’s conservation success, noting that the number of tigers in Bihar has increased eightfold over the last 12 years. “This growth shows that Bihar provides a favourable environment for tiger breeding,” he said.
The event also saw remarks from Additional Chief Secretary of the Environment Department, Harjot Kaur Bamhra, who emphasised the need to prevent encroachment in tiger habitats. “We must ensure the tiger continues to rule the jungle, undisturbed,” she said.
Zoo director Hemant Patil, who welcomed guests and expressed gratitude for the department’s support, lauded recent conservation efforts and called on the public to help protect both forests and wildlife.
The celebration included a painting competition for schoolchildren, with winners awarded in four categories. In Group A, DPS School secured first place, Loyola High School came second, and Saint Michael High School took third. Group B saw a repeat win for DPS, followed by Loyola and Radiant International School.
Winners of Snake Day competitions were also honoured. Dignitaries in attendance included Director of Ecology Abhay Kumar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Prabhat Kumar Gupta, and Forest Development Chief Arvinder Singh, among others.
