Katihar: The death of a young man in police custody in Katihar has triggered violent protests, with angry villagers clashing with police and blocking a key highway.
The incident took place in the Phalka police station area, where the deceased, identified as Rakesh Yadav from Gopalpatti village, had been detained in connection with a robbery case.
According to police, Yadav’s health deteriorated on Saturday morning, following which he was taken to a local community health centre and then referred to Sadar Hospital. He died on the way before reaching the hospital.
However, family members have alleged that he was assaulted while in custody, claiming his death was a result of police brutality. They have demanded that a murder case be registered against those responsible.
As news of the death spread, hundreds of villagers gathered at Phalka Chowk and blocked State Highway 77, bringing traffic to a standstill. The protest soon turned violent when police attempted to disperse the crowd.
Several policemen were injured in the clashes, including officer Naveen Kumar and constable Sanjeev Kumar, who reportedly sustained a serious head injury.
During the unrest, some protesters allegedly snatched a rifle from a police officer and fled. The mob also chased police personnel and caused damage to the local police station.
Authorities have since deployed additional forces from nearby areas, turning the locality into a heavily guarded zone. Senior officers are on the ground attempting to restore order and negotiate with protesters.
In an official statement, police said the deceased had attempted suicide while in custody and died during treatment. The claim has been disputed by the family.
Following the incident, the Station House Officer Ravi Kumar Rai and investigating officer Kundan Kumar Patel have been suspended pending inquiry.
Officials said an investigation is under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, while efforts continue to bring the situation under control.
