Bhagalpur/Patna: The water level of the Kosi river has been rising steadily in Naugachia subdivision of Bhagalpur district, prompting the Water Resources Department to step up monitoring along embankments.
Officials said the increase is linked to recent rainfall in Nepal, which has led to higher inflow in the river system.
Despite the rise, authorities said water levels at key gauge stations remain below the warning threshold.
Water levels below warning mark
At the Madrauni gauge station, the warning level is 30.48 metres, while the river measured 26.34 metres on Saturday morning.
At Chorhar, the warning mark stands at 30.77 metres, with the water level recorded at 27.98 metres.
Officials said there was currently no immediate flood threat but that precautionary measures were in place.
Six barrage gates opened
Executive engineer Gautam Kumar said six gates of the Kosi barrage had been opened to allow excess water to pass and manage the increased flow.
He said the department was closely tracking the river’s movement and that the situation remained under control.
“The water level is below both the danger mark and warning level, so there is no cause for panic at present,” Kumar said.
Embankments under watch
The department has directed engineers and field staff to conduct regular inspections of embankments, particularly at vulnerable points.
Officials said emergency resources had been kept ready in case of any sudden change in river conditions.
Advisory for riverbank residents
The Water Resources Department has urged residents living along the riverbanks not to pay attention to rumours and to rely only on official updates.
Authorities said the river’s condition was being monitored continuously and that any significant developments would be communicated promptly.
