Patna: A World AIDS Day awareness programme in Patna on Monday put the spotlight on Lenacapavir, a long-acting antiretroviral injection that global experts believe could reshape the future of HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention.
The event was organised by Public Awareness for Healthy Approach for Living (PAHAL) at the Dr Diwakar Tejaswi Clinic on Exhibition Road. Speaking at the programme, Dr Diwakar Tejaswi, Medical Director of PAHAL and a senior HIV specialist, described Lenacapavir as a “revolutionary” advancement—one that brings the world “closer than ever” to the dream of an AIDS-free society.
A six-monthly shot that treats — and prevents — HIV
Dr Tejaswi highlighted the drug’s unique profile: Lenacapavir is a long-acting capsid inhibitor administered once every six months, offering a lifeline to individuals who struggle with daily medication regimes.
According to international clinical trials cited by him, Lenacapavir:
-
Rapidly suppresses viral load in HIV-positive individuals
-
Remains effective even in multi-drug resistant HIV cases
-
Provides over 90% protection against HIV infection when used as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
-
Is “ideal for patients needing long-term, low-maintenance treatment”
“With Lenacapavir, the dream of an AIDS-free society comes closer than ever. It is equally effective in treating HIV and preventing new infections,” Dr Tejaswi said. The drug, he noted, is expected to become available in India within the next year.
Prevention remains key
Emphasising that science alone cannot defeat HIV/AIDS, Dr Tejaswi also reiterated essential preventive measures:
-
Practice safe sex and use condoms
-
Avoid sharing needles or syringes
-
Ensure HIV-safe blood transfusions
-
Use PrEP options like Lenacapavir if at high risk
-
Undergo regular HIV testing
‘Awareness will drive change’
At the event, Vibhakar Yashaswi, an advisor to PAHAL who had travelled from the United States, said that sustained public awareness programmes were vital for reducing infections and combating stigma. “Such initiatives will increase awareness among the people,” he added.
