Vaishali: The Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum-cum-Smriti Stupa in Vaishali, Bihar, has added another layer of significance to its architectural grandeur by preserving the sacred ashes of Lord Buddha in bulletproof glass. Installed on the first floor of the stupa, the relic is protected with state-of-the-art security to ensure its preservation for generations to come.
The Asthi Kalash rests on a 1.45-metre-high decorated stone throne, allowing devotees to view it from all sides. The structure is adorned with engraved Buddhist motifs on brass, reflecting the deep spiritual and artistic heritage associated with the relic. To reach the display, visitors pass through semi-ramps on both sides of an archway, which lead to a floor featuring 40 niches with statues of Lord Buddha in different postures and other Buddhist artifacts. A special Pradakshinapath (circumambulation path) has been built so devotees can walk around the Kalash in reverence.
Beyond its religious significance, the museum-cum-stupa is also a cultural and tourism hub. The complex includes a modern library, meditation centre, museum, visitor centre, amphitheatre, and cafeteria. For those wishing to stay, there is a guest house with 12 private rooms and a dormitory accommodating up to 96 people.
Vaishali’s stupa is becoming a prominent stop on the international Buddhist pilgrimage circuit, drawing visitors from India and abroad. Here, pilgrims not only pay homage to the sacred ashes but also immerse themselves in the rich history, culture, and heritage of one of Buddhism’s most revered sites.
