58.58% voters turnout in second phase of Lok Sabha polls in Bihar

Patna: The voting process for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in Bihar came to a close on Friday, witnessing participation across five key constituencies: Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Bhagalpur, and Banka. According to official data, a total of 58.58 percent of eligible voters exercised their franchise by 6 pm. Notably, Katihar recorded the highest turnout at 64.60 percent, while Bhagalpur saw the lowest participation at 51 percent.

Following a relatively subdued turnout in the first phase, voter enthusiasm surged during this phase. In the initial round of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, only 48.23 percent of eligible voters cast their votes, marking a 10 percent increase compared to the current phase.

The fate of 50 candidates, comprising 47 men and 3 women, now rests in the electronic voting machines (EVMs). While three seats witness a direct contest, two constituencies, namely Kishanganj and Purnia, see a triangular battle.

Chief Electoral Officer HR Srinivas attributed several factors to the increased voter turnout, including extensive transportation facilities, door-to-door awareness campaigns, provision of shade to combat sunstroke, and the availability of medical kits. Srinivas highlighted that despite these efforts, the overall voting percentage stood at around 60 percent, signaling ongoing efforts to boost participation in future elections.

ADG JS Gangwar affirmed that the voting process unfolded peacefully across Bihar’s second phase. While a few individuals were detained in various constituencies, there were no reports of significant disturbances or altercations at polling stations. Gangwar clarified that voting could not be reconducted at boycotted polling stations.

Notably, voting continued until 4 pm at 102 polling stations and until 6 pm at 146 polling stations in Belhar and Katoria of Banka. Comprehensive security measures were implemented, with approximately 42,000 security personnel and 18 home defense forces deployed to ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process.
