Saran: A delegation of private investors has visited the long-closed Madhaura Sugar Mill in Saran district, raising hopes that the historic facility could be revived as part of the state government’s plan to restart dormant sugar factories.
The team from SNJ Group of Companies, based in Tamil Nadu, inspected the mill premises on Sunday and reviewed the condition of its infrastructure, machinery and available resources.
The mill has remained closed for years and much of the site has deteriorated over time. Local residents said the visit by investors had renewed optimism that the plant could be brought back into operation.
During the visit, the delegation also met local sugarcane farmers to discuss production levels, market conditions and the prospects for restarting the factory. The investors visited nearby fields to assess the availability of raw material and better understand the challenges faced by growers.
Officials said the inspection forms part of the Bihar government’s broader plan to revive closed sugar mills under the Saat Nischay‑3 scheme. The initiative also includes a proposal to establish up to 25 new sugar mills across the state.
Farmers told the delegation about issues related to sugarcane cultivation, including production costs and market access, while exploring how a functioning mill could support local agriculture.
The Madhaura facility is considered historically significant. Established in 1904 during the colonial period, it is among the earliest sugar mills in Bihar.
