Patna: Maithili Thakur, the popular folk singer and newly elected MLA from Alinagar assembly seat in Darbhanga district, took her oath on Monday, becoming the youngest member of Bihar’s 18th Legislative Assembly. She appeared at the swearing-in ceremony wearing a yellow sari and a traditional Mithila turban, instantly drawing attention and celebrating the cultural identity of her region. Thakur also chose to take her oath in Maithili language, making the occasion a special display of regional pride.
Speaking after the oath, Thakur said she was committed to the development of her constituency and to addressing the aspirations of the youth. Her choice of attire and language was seen as a strong statement of cultural pride, highlighting the Mithila region’s traditions. The turban, in particular, is considered a symbol of honour and prestige in Mithila, and her wearing it during the ceremony reinforced her connection to her roots.
Thakur’s celebration of traditional attire comes after a period of controversy. During the elections, a video of her eating makhana while wearing the turban went viral, resulting in online trolling and criticism from some quarters. Earlier, a remark from a Uttar Pradesh legislator about the turban had also created tension. These incidents brought attention to Mithila’s cultural symbols, making Thakur’s public display of them during her oath a meaningful act of pride and defiance.
Cultural observers and socio-political groups noted that Thakur’s swearing-in is significant not only politically but also culturally. In Mithila, the turban is more than a piece of clothing — it represents identity, respect and tradition. By taking her oath in Maithili and wearing the turban, Thakur has sent a message that young leaders can embrace their heritage while stepping confidently into politics. Her oath-taking ceremony has inspired people across the region and highlighted the importance of regional culture in Bihar’s public life.
