New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday cleared the construction of the 82.4 km Mokama–Munger section of the Buxar–Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor, a greenfield four-lane highway set to transform connectivity in eastern Bihar.
Approved at a capital cost of Rs 4,447.38 crore under the hybrid annuity mode, the access-controlled corridor will link Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur and Munger, further extending towards Bhagalpur. Officials said the highway is designed for speeds of up to 100 km/h, cutting travel time between Mokama and Munger to about 1.5 hours while ensuring safer and faster movement for both passengers and freight.

The corridor is expected to have a direct impact on the Munger–Jamalpur–Bhagalpur industrial belt, which hosts an ordnance factory, a locomotive workshop, and major food-processing hubs such as ITC’s Munger plant. Bhagalpur, long known for its silk industry, is being positioned as a textile and logistics hub, while Barahiya is emerging in agro-warehousing and packaging.
The project is projected to generate nearly 14.8 lakh man-days of direct employment and a further 18.5 lakh man-days indirectly. Officials expect wider job creation as industrial and logistics activity intensifies around the new corridor.
