Muzaffarpur: Indian cyber police have arrested a man for creating and circulating fake videos and audio clips using artificial intelligence to mimic the voices of the country’s president and prime minister.
The accused, identified as Pramod Kumar Raj from Bochaha Bhagwanpur, was taken into custody following a First Information Report (FIR) filed at the Muzaffarpur cyber police station. Authorities also seized a mobile phone believed to have been used in the creation of the videos.
Senior Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar said the content, which surfaced on social media on January 2, was designed to “spread confusion among the public and undermine the dignity and trust associated with India’s highest constitutional offices.” Officials warned that such AI-generated material had the potential to sow distrust in democratic institutions, provoke social unrest, and fuel anti-national sentiment.
A special team led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Cyber) was formed to investigate the case. Technical evidence was collected swiftly, leading to the arrest of Raj. Police said they were reviewing the accused’s previous records and coordinating with Bochaha and other local police stations to determine if any pending cases required further legal action.
The FIR remains under investigation. Authorities have emphasised that prompt action was necessary given the sensitive nature of the incident.
