Muzaffarpur/Patna:The Railways has accelerated work on the final location survey for a proposed third rail line on the Muzaffarpur–Samastipur–Bachhwara section, a key corridor in north Bihar that experiences heavy passenger and freight traffic.
According to railway officials, the survey is being conducted by a Delhi-based private limited company on the 86.21-km route. Once completed, the findings will form the basis of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will be used for administrative and financial approvals.
Busy route faces growing traffic pressure
The Muzaffarpur–Samastipur–Bachhwara section is among the busiest routes under East Central Railway.
A large number of passenger, express and freight trains operate on the corridor every day. At present, the route has two tracks that handle up and down traffic, but rising passenger numbers and freight movement have increased operational pressure.
Railway officials said trains are often required to wait at stations for crossings and overtaking, leading to delays and affecting overall efficiency.
Additional line expected to improve operations
The proposed third line is expected to increase capacity and facilitate smoother train operations on the route.
Officials believe the project could help reduce congestion, improve punctuality and allow more flexibility in train scheduling.
The additional track is also expected to benefit freight services, which often face delays during peak periods when passenger trains receive priority.
Potential boost for freight movement and industry
Railway experts say the project could strengthen freight transportation in the region by creating additional capacity for goods trains.
Industrial centres such as Barauni, Samastipur, Bachhwara and Muzaffarpur may benefit from faster movement of raw materials and finished products, potentially supporting trade and commercial activity.
Survey to determine route and project requirements
The final location survey will assess the alignment of the proposed line and determine land requirements, bridge construction needs and other infrastructure components.
It will also provide estimates of project costs and outline a possible implementation timeline.
Once the survey is completed, the Railways will begin the process of finalising the project proposal.
Surveys underway on other Bihar rail routes
The Railways is also conducting final location surveys on several other important routes in north Bihar.
Officials said surveys are currently underway on the Chhapra Gramin–Bachhwara route, the Shahpur Patori corridor and the Barauni–Katihar section, among others.
Together, these proposed projects cover nearly 450 km of railway routes across the region and are aimed at enhancing rail infrastructure and capacity.
