Muzaffarpur: A large-scale household listing exercise is currently underway in the outskirts of Muzaffarpur, where four nearby villages have been brought under an urban census system. These villages fall under the Mushahari block and are now being treated as “Out Growth Areas” due to their growing urban features and close link with the city.
The four areas included in the process are Akharaghat-Sheikhpur, Sherpur, Bhikhanpur Dih near Khabra, and a stretch extending from Bhagwanpur Roundabout towards the BB Ganj National Highway. These locations were selected after a joint inspection by officials from the municipal corporation and census department, who found that these areas have developed urban facilities such as better roads, housing clusters, and stronger connectivity with the main city.
To complete the survey, authorities have divided the entire region into 53 blocks. Each block is further split into smaller units, and teams of six to eight enumerators are working in each section. In total, around 745 enumerators have been deployed to carry out the house listing work. Officials say the teams are moving systematically to ensure that every household is counted properly.
According to Urban Census Officer and Deputy Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar, the exercise is being conducted strictly for census purposes. He clarified that this does not mean the villages have been officially merged into the city’s municipal wards. However, the step reflects how rapidly the outskirts of Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation are changing, as rural areas gradually take on more urban characteristics and become closely linked with city development.
