New Delhi/Patna: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a public-facing initiative to improve sanitation standards at toll plazas, offering motorists a financial incentive for reporting unclean facilities.
Under the “Clean Toilet Picture Challenge”, travellers who find toilets at NHAI-operated toll plazas to be unhygienic or below prescribed standards can upload a geo-tagged and time-stamped photograph through the “Rajasthyatra” mobile application. If the complaint is verified, Rs 1,000 will be credited directly to the vehicle’s FASTag account.
The incentive will not be paid in cash and can only be used for future toll payments. NHAI has clarified that each vehicle will be eligible for the reward only once during the campaign. In addition, only the first valid complaint received for a particular toilet on a given day will qualify for the incentive.
The campaign will run until June 30, 2026, and applies exclusively to toilets located at toll plazas on national highways operated by NHAI. Toilets at private petrol pumps, dhabas or other privately managed establishments are not covered under the scheme.
Officials said the initiative seeks to strengthen accountability mechanisms while improving essential facilities for highway users. Clean and functional toilets are considered particularly important for women, children, senior citizens and long-distance drivers, who rely heavily on rest stops along highways.
Thousands of vehicles travel daily on NHAI-operated highways across states including Bihar, where improved infrastructure has led to increased road traffic. By involving passengers directly in monitoring, NHAI aims to ensure higher standards of hygiene and responsiveness.
The authority has appealed to highway users to participate actively in the campaign, describing it as a step towards safer, cleaner and more user-friendly national highways.
