Patna: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Patna has launched a fortnight-long celebration to mark National Handloom Day 2026, with a series of academic, creative and awareness-driven activities scheduled from August 3 to August 21. The initiative aims to celebrate India’s rich handloom heritage while encouraging students, faculty and staff to engage with the country’s diverse weaving traditions.
Wear Handloom to Celebrate India’s Weaving Legacy
As part of the celebrations, NIFT Patna encouraged all students, faculty members and staff to wear handloom garments on August 7 as a tribute to India’s weavers and artisans. A dedicated Handloom Selfie Booth has also been set up in the Central Hall of the campus, allowing members of the institute to capture photographs and express their support for India’s handloom heritage throughout the celebration period.
Director Highlights Importance of Traditional Textiles
NIFT Patna Director Col. Rahul Sharma said the handloom sector reflects India’s cultural identity, craftsmanship and sustainable traditions. He noted that the institute remains committed to preserving and promoting traditional textiles by creating awareness among young designers through academic activities, creative competitions and experiential learning.
He added that such initiatives help students appreciate indigenous crafts while inspiring them to blend traditional knowledge with contemporary design practices, thereby contributing to the preservation and promotion of India’s vibrant handloom ecosystem.
Series of Competitions and Awareness Activities Planned
The celebration calendar includes several events designed to promote awareness of India’s textile heritage.
On August 7, the institute will publish special awareness reels on its official social media platforms. On August 18, Foundation Programme students will participate in Poster Painting and Face Painting competitions based on the handloom theme.
A Handloom Quiz for students, faculty and staff will be organised on August 19 to enhance knowledge of India’s weaving traditions.
Celebrations to Conclude with Heritage Walk
The National Handloom Day celebrations will conclude on August 21 with a special programme at the NIFT Patna campus. The event will feature the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, Saraswati Vandana, the Director’s address, a Heritage Walk across the campus and a vote of thanks.
Through the fortnight-long programme, NIFT Patna aims to strengthen awareness of India’s traditional textile heritage while encouraging future designers to preserve and promote the country’s handloom legacy.
