Patna: Bihar minister Nitin Nabin resigned from his ministerial position on Tuesday, stepping down from his charge of the Road Construction and Urban Development departments. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed him as its National Working President, a move signalling a likely succession to the party’s top post.
Nabin’s resignation follows the BJP’s longstanding principle of “one person, one post”. With JP Nadda’s tenure as national president extended until June 2024 and now serving as India’s Health Minister, the party had been seeking a suitable candidate to assume central leadership responsibilities. Nabin’s elevation comes after this search concluded.
On Monday, Nabin was formally installed as National Working President at the BJP headquarters in Delhi. Party leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah and outgoing president JP Nadda, welcomed him with flowers and traditional celebrations, as party workers raised slogans of “Jai Shri Ram”.
The BJP had appointed Nadda as national president in 2020. Since the completion of his term, he has continued in an extended capacity while serving in the central government. Nabin’s current appointment aligns with the party’s convention of promoting the working president to full national president in due course.
Following Nabin’s departure from the Bihar cabinet, both the Road Construction and Urban Development portfolios now fall vacant. Sources indicate that the Nitish Kumar-led government is expected to expand the cabinet soon to redistribute these responsibilities among BJP legislators, though it remains unclear whether the departments will be assigned to one or two ministers.
