Patna: The Janata Dal (United) held its first major meeting following its performance in the Bihar elections on Saturday, drawing sharp attention to the party’s internal dynamics as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched a new membership drive at the party headquarters in Patna.
Long queues of leaders — from senior figures to district-level representatives — formed on stage to receive party memberships directly from the chief minister, in a public display that underscored Nitish Kumar’s continued influence within Bihar politics. Chants of “Nitish Kumar Zindabad” echoed throughout the event as party members jostled for position.
The meeting opened with JD(U) executive president Sanjay Jha initiating Kumar’s membership renewal, followed immediately by Kumar renewing Jha’s membership. Once the process began, leaders hurried to collect their renewed credentials from the CM, turning what is typically a routine organisational procedure into a symbolic show of loyalty.

Competition for visibility
According to party insiders, JD(U) membership is valid for one or two years and requires regular renewal. However, this year’s rush reflected more than a procedural update, with several leaders reportedly keen to signal their organisational importance by being seen receiving membership directly from Kumar.
Senior JD(U) leader Narayan Singh, state president Umesh Kushwaha and numerous other office-bearers were among those who took membership certificates from the stage.
The membership drive was formally launched alongside the event, attracting a large turnout of leaders and local representatives at the party’s Patna office.
Recognition for Nitish Kumar
The gathering also featured a ceremonial moment as Sanjay Jha congratulated the chief minister for being listed in the World Book of Records, London, prompting applause from party workers seated in the auditorium.
The show of enthusiasm is being viewed within political circles as a signal of renewed consolidation inside JD(U) amid shifting alliances and intensifying competition within Bihar politics.
