Patna: The Patna district administration has announced a complete ban on all non-government boats on the Ganga and other rivers during this year’s Makar Sankranti festival on January 14 and 15, citing safety concerns amid the large crowds expected at the river ghats.
According to an order issued by the District Magistrate, strict legal action will be taken against anyone violating the ban. Government-authorised boats will be allowed to operate, but all others are prohibited.
Crowd Management and Safety Measures
Authorities have stepped up preparations for crowd control, traffic management, and law enforcement at the ghats, where thousands traditionally gather for ritual bathing and kite-flying. Magistrates, police officers, special mobile units, and river patrol teams will maintain close surveillance, particularly at high-density areas.
The administration has divided the river ghats into multiple sectors, deploying two motorboats, divers with essential equipment, and personnel in each. In addition, eight State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams will remain on standby to respond to any emergencies. Circle Officers have been instructed to ensure the availability of life jackets, boats, and divers at all river and pond ghats under their jurisdiction.
Continuous Monitoring by Officers
Sub-divisional officers and police officials will remain on constant patrol to prevent negligence and ensure public safety. The district administration has urged residents and visitors to comply with rules, ignore rumours, and celebrate the festival responsibly.
