Patna: With temperatures soaring across Bihar, air conditioners have become essential in homes, offices, hospitals and commercial establishments across Patna. However, officials and technicians have warned that negligence in operating and maintaining AC units can lead to fires, short circuits and compressor failures during the summer season.

The warning comes amid rising concerns over AC-related accidents reported in several parts of the country as residents increasingly rely on cooling systems to cope with the heat.

Rising Temperatures Increase Pressure on Cooling Systems

The prolonged heatwave has led to a sharp rise in AC usage throughout Patna. Technicians said many households are operating air conditioners continuously for long hours, placing heavy strain on compressors and electrical systems.

Experts warned that old machines, damaged wiring and gas leakage can significantly increase the risk of overheating and electrical fires.

Experts Recommend Safer Temperature Settings

Dhananjay, an AC technician working in Patna, said many users operate their AC units at extremely low temperatures such as 16°C or 18°C for extended periods.

He said this places excessive pressure on compressors, increasing the possibility of overheating and short circuits. Experts recommend maintaining AC temperatures between 24°C and 26°C for safer and more energy-efficient operation.

Technicians also advised users not to run air conditioners continuously without breaks, as prolonged operation can overheat internal electronic components.

Correct AC Capacity Is Essential

According to technicians, selecting an AC unit appropriate for the size of the room is critical for safe and efficient cooling.

Improperly sized units often consume more electricity and face greater operational stress, which can reduce the lifespan of the machine and increase the likelihood of technical faults.

Experts added that installation should always be carried out by trained professionals to avoid electrical and refrigerant-related issues.

Fire Department Issues Advisory

Officials from the Fire Department in Patna have appealed to residents and institutions to follow safety measures while using cooling appliances during the ongoing heatwave.

Authorities advised hospitals, offices and residential complexes to avoid excessive cooling settings and ensure regular inspection of electrical systems connected to AC units.

Delayed Servicing Raises Safety Risks

Technicians said many users fail to service their AC units regularly despite heavy summer usage.

Dust accumulation in filters, condensers and compressors reduces cooling efficiency and causes machines to draw higher electrical loads. Experts said this can result in overheating, burnt wiring and compressor damage.

They recommended a complete servicing and inspection of AC systems before and during the summer season.

Faulty Wiring Remains A Major Concern

Electrical technician Sandeep Chauhan said low-quality wiring, plugs and extension boards are among the leading causes of AC-related electrical fires.

He advised households to install dedicated MCBs and use high-grade electrical wiring capable of handling heavy loads safely.

Experts also cautioned against allowing untrained workers to install or repair AC systems, as improper installation can lead to gas leaks and electrical faults.

Experts Warn Against Immediate Restart After Power Cuts

Technicians advised residents not to switch on AC units immediately after electricity supply resumes following a power outage.

According to experts, sudden voltage surges after power restoration can damage compressors and increase the risk of electrical failure. They recommended waiting at least three to five minutes before restarting the system.

Residents were also advised to pay attention to unusual sounds, burning smells or repeated electrical tripping while operating AC units.

Authorities Urge Public Vigilance

The administration and fire safety officials in Patna have urged residents to remain cautious while using cooling appliances during the summer months.

Officials said regular servicing, proper wiring, moderate temperature settings and responsible usage remain essential to preventing accidents and ensuring safe operation during the ongoing heatwave.
