Patna: Garbage heaps and meat shops will no longer be permitted within a 10-kilometre radius of Patna’s Jayprakash Narayan International Airport, the divisional administration has announced, as part of a drive to reduce the risk of bird strikes and improve air safety.
The directive was issued on Wednesday by Divisional Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar during a meeting of the Airport Environment Management Committee, attended by senior officials including the Patna District Magistrate and the Municipal Commissioner.
Parashar instructed officials to remove any existing garbage mounds immediately and said that prohibiting meat and fish shops around the airport was essential to prevent birds from gathering in the area. He added that maintaining a clean environment is critical for safer air operations.
The Commissioner further directed officials to ensure that environmental management standards are upheld within a 15km radius of the airport. As part of the plan, a new garbage transfer station in Yarpur is to be made operational by 26 January 2026.
He emphasised that safeguarding air traffic must remain a priority and urged departments to follow global best practices in airport environmental management as Patna prepares for increasing aviation activity.
