Patna: A major road infrastructure project along the banks of the Ganges in Patna is expected to significantly improve connectivity between North and South Bihar.
The under-construction four-lane road stretching from Bhadra Ghat to Didarganj will connect directly with the Kacchi Dargah–Bidupur Bridge, a six-lane bridge project nearing completion.
Officials said the new link would reduce travel time between Patna City and Samastipur from more than three hours to roughly one hour.
Road Project Expected To Be Ready By December
The 8.5km riverfront road is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 158.40 crore.
According to officials from the Road Construction Department:
- around 35% of construction work has already been completed
- the target is to complete the road by December
- traffic operations are expected to begin in January
Authorities said construction was progressing alongside land availability.
Recently, the district administration conducted an encroachment removal drive along the Ganges riverfront between:
- Chitragupta Ghat
- Kangan Ghat
Alternative Route For Patna City Residents
Once operational, the new corridor is expected to provide an additional transport route similar to JP Ganga Path.
Officials said the bridge-road connection would ease pressure on:
- Mahatma Gandhi Setu
- JP Setu
Residents of Patna City will gain a faster route towards North Bihar while reducing dependence on the city’s congested internal roads.
Relief For Pilgrims And Traders
Authorities said the project would especially benefit pilgrims visiting Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib by improving accessibility and reducing travel delays.
The new four-lane road is also expected to improve freight movement towards Marufganj Mandi.
At present, goods vehicles heading towards the wholesale market must pass through heavily congested inner-city roads.
Once the riverfront road becomes operational, freight vehicles will be able to access the market directly, reducing congestion and travel time.
Better Access To Ghats During Chhath
The project includes a 2.25km greenfield stretch aimed at improving access to riverfront ghats during religious festivals, particularly Chhath Puja.
Officials said the road was being designed to help devotees reach the Ganges more easily during major festivals and public gatherings along the riverbank.
