Patna: Construction work on the international-standard hockey ground at Rajendra Nagar in Patna has regained momentum, with officials targeting August for its inauguration and use by players.
The project has reached a crucial stage after the installation of the rubber shock pad beneath the playing surface. The next step involves laying the synthetic astro turf, which will begin once technical clearances are received.
On Wednesday, a team from an inspection agency accredited by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) conducted a detailed assessment of the facility. The inspection covered surface level, slope material, rubber shock pad thickness, quality of construction materials, drainage systems and shock absorption standards.
The team also collected samples from multiple locations across the ground for laboratory testing. Officials said turf installation and joint-pasting work will begin after the inspection report receives approval.
Authorities expect the remaining work to be completed by July, allowing the venue to become operational from August.
Patna’s First International-Level AstroTurf Facility
Once completed, the Rajendra Nagar project will become Patna’s first international-standard astro-turf hockey ground.
The project had faced delays in recent months due to technical issues, including concerns over damaged soft pits and construction quality. These shortcomings had drawn public attention earlier this month, prompting corrective measures and renewed efforts to complete the facility.
Second Phase to Add Gallery and Player Facilities
Officials said work on the second phase of the project will begin soon after the playing surface is completed.
The expansion will include a permanent spectator gallery with seating for 1,000 people, along with changing rooms, toilets, administrative offices and dormitory accommodation for players.
Authorities have also planned future expansion options. Temporary galleries capable of accommodating an additional 2,000 to 2,500 spectators can be installed during major tournaments and events.
Olympic-Grade Turf Imported from Europe
The turf selected for the Patna facility has been imported from Europe and is among the latest hockey surfaces available internationally.
According to officials, the same category of turf was used during the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. Certified by the International Hockey Federation, the surface is designed to improve playing speed, ball movement and overall match quality while reducing the risk of player injuries.
Sports officials believe the new facility will strengthen Bihar’s hockey infrastructure and create opportunities for hosting national and international competitions in the state.
