Patna: Patna has improved its cleanliness ranking in the Swachhta Survey 2024, receiving a three-star rating this time. The results will be announced today at Vikas Bhavan in Delhi during a special event attended by the President, Union Ministers and state representatives. This rating has been given under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) scheme, which ranks cities across India based on cleanliness and sanitation standards.
Last year, Patna had applied for three stars but managed to get only one star and was placed at the 25th rank nationally. However, officials believe that this year the city might enter the top 20 list. Along with this improvement, Patna has also received recognition for better water quality and has been certified as Water Plus. It has also been selected in the Ministerial Award category at the state level.
Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar said that several new initiatives led to this achievement. About 650 garbage points in the city were cleaned and turned into clean public spaces. Toilets, drains and manholes were repaired, and cleaning inspectors in all 75 municipal wards were connected through walkie-talkies to get real-time updates on drainage and waterlogging issues.
Parashar added that if Patna had a functional garbage processing plant, it could have secured a five-star rating. He said the garbage plant in Ramchak Bairia did not perform as expected. Now, with approval from the central government, the Urban Development Housing Department is planning to set up a new garbage processing plant soon at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore. The tender process will begin shortly.
