Patna: The area around Patna Junction railway station is set for a major transformation as work advances on the city’s underground metro network. Several shops and structures near the railway station are likely to be removed to make way for metro entry and exit facilities, while a three-level underground interchange station is planned in front of the railway station.
The Patna Metro Rail Corporation has proposed the interchange as a key connection between Corridor One and Corridor Two. To facilitate the project, the district administration has started the process of clearing the required land and has issued notices to people claiming rights over properties in the area.
Shops And Structures Face Removal
The proposed metro entry and exit facilities within the Patna Junction premises will require the removal of Madni Musafirkhana, owned by Jamiat Ulama Bihar. Other structures, including a milk market, auto stand and several shops, are also expected to be removed.
The district administration has started action on the proposal of the Patna Metro Rail Corporation to clear the portion of land in front of the railway premises. The District Land Acquisition Office has issued notices to more than a dozen people asking them to submit documents if they have claims over the land.
People claiming ownership or other rights over the land, shops or buildings have been asked to submit their applications along with supporting documents. Eligible claimants will receive compensation after verification of their documents and claims.
So far, four people have submitted claims, and their documents are being examined. Others who have received notices have not yet responded.
What Happens If No Claim Is Made?
The administration has indicated that people who do not respond to the initial notices will be given another opportunity to submit their claims.
If there is still no response, the land will be treated as government land, according to District Land Acquisition Officer Ravi Ranjan Gupta. He said documents submitted by claimants would be verified before any decision is taken.
Where claims are found valid, compensation will be provided for eligible land, shops and buildings. Following the compensation process, the administration will proceed with clearing the land required for the metro project.
Three-Level Underground Metro Interchange
One of the biggest changes planned around Patna Junction is the construction of a three-level underground metro interchange station in front of the railway station.
The interchange will allow passengers to move between Metro Corridor One and Corridor Two, making Patna Junction an important connection point within the city’s expanding metro network.
Corridor One will connect Danapur to Khemnichak, passing through key areas including Saguna Mor, RPS, Patliputra, Rukanpura, Rajabazar, Patna Zoo, Vikas Bhawan, Vidyut Bhawan, Patna Junction, Mithapur, Ramkrishna Nagar and Jagannpura.
Corridor Two will connect Patna Junction with ISBT, covering areas such as Akashvani, Gandhi Maidan, PMCH, Patna University, Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, Rajendra Nagar, Malahi Pakri, Khemnichak, Bhootnath and Zero Mile.
Direct Metro Access From Patna Junction
The plan will allow passengers arriving at Patna Junction railway station to directly access the underground metro station from the railway premises.
According to the project plan, access routes will lead towards Buddha Park, Chiraiyatand Bridge and the Multi-Modal Hub, giving passengers multiple ways to enter and exit the metro station.
The arrangement is expected to make transfers between railway and metro services easier, particularly for passengers arriving at Patna Junction and continuing their journey to different parts of the city.
Metro Currently Runs On 6.2-Km Stretch
Patna Metro is currently operating on a 6.2-km elevated stretch between Patliputra Bus Terminal and Malahi Pakri.
According to the project information, Khemnichak station is expected to be added to the operational network next month. The elevated section between Khemnichak and Mithapur is targeted for operation in June 2027.
The underground route from Malahi Pakri through Patna University to Patna Junction is targeted for 2028, while the remaining section of Corridor One is planned to become operational by 2030.
Patna Junction Set For Major Connectivity Change
The planned development will significantly change the area around Patna Junction, combining railway, metro and multimodal connectivity at one of the city’s busiest transport hubs.
While land acquisition and clearance will affect several existing shops and structures, the completed project is expected to give passengers direct access between the railway station and Patna Metro network.
With the proposed underground interchange connecting Corridor One and Corridor Two, Patna Junction is set to become one of the most important nodes in the city’s future public transport system.
