Patna: Passengers travelling through Patna Junction have raised concerns over significant disparities in parking charges across different entry points of the station, with many saying the system places an uneven financial burden on commuters.
The station has three main entrance—Mahavir Mandir side, Karbigahiya side, and Old RMS Colony side—where parking fees differ considerably. The Mahavir Mandir side has been designated as a “premium parking” zone, with notably higher rates than the other two locations.
For two-wheelers, commuters are charged Rs 20 for up to two hours, Rs 30 for 6 to 12 hours, and Rs 40 for up to 24 hours at the premium parking facility. Charges for four-wheelers rise steeply to Rs 80 for two hours, Rs 350 for 6 to 12 hours, and Rs 400 for a full day.
In contrast, parking on the Karbigahiya side is considerably cheaper. Two-wheeler users pay Rs 10 for up to two hours, Rs 12 for 2 to 6 hours, and Rs 20 for 12 to 24 hours. Four-wheeler charges are Rs 25, Rs 100, and Rs 200 respectively for similar durations.
The Old RMS Colony side follows a similar pricing structure to Karbigahiya, effectively creating two parallel fee systems within the same railway premises.
Railway officials have defended the higher charges at the Mahavir Mandir entrance, stating that it serves as the station’s primary access point. Previously, lower parking fees had led to vehicles being left for extended periods, causing congestion and making it difficult for passengers to access the station.
According to officials, the introduction of premium parking has reduced vehicle congestion at the main entrance and improved passenger movement.
However, the shift has had a knock-on effect elsewhere. Commuters report a surge in vehicles at the Old RMS Colony parking area, where the number of parked vehicles has increased significantly, leading to long queues, particularly of two-wheelers.
Passengers say the uneven pricing system is confusing and inconvenient, with many calling for a more uniform fee structure across all entry points of Patna Junction.
