Patna: Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified field monitoring of drainage infrastructure to minimise waterlogging during the monsoon and ensure smooth stormwater discharge across the city.
As part of the exercise, Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena conducted an inspection of wards 24, 25, 26 and 27 on Thursday morning during rainfall to assess ground conditions and identify locations where drainage remains slow or vulnerable to water accumulation.
Nine Sensitive Locations Reviewed
During the inspection, the commissioner reviewed drainage arrangements at nine identified waterlogging-prone sites and directed engineers and officials to implement both immediate and long-term corrective measures.
Divisional Commissioner’s Office Junction
At the three-road junction near the Divisional Commissioner’s Office, officials reported that water had been drained using a super sucker machine under an existing action plan.
The commissioner directed officials to coordinate with the Road Construction Department to ensure a permanent solution through necessary infrastructure works.
Drainage Near DM Residence
At the site opposite the District Magistrate’s residence, Meena reviewed drainage conditions and instructed officials to explore laying hume pipes and connecting the area to drains located near Gyan Bhawan or within the Gandhi Maidan complex.
As an interim measure, water was pumped out using pump sets.
Christ Church Diocesan School Area
The inspection also covered the stretch near Christ Church Diocesan School opposite Gate No. 5 of Gandhi Maidan, where waterlogging was observed.
Officials found that the underground drain required cleaning. The commissioner directed that the road be cut in a controlled manner during night hours to facilitate drain cleaning and later restored to minimise disruption to traffic.
Bans Ghat Drainage Concerns
At Moksh Dwar (Bans Ghat), officials informed the commissioner that the existing drain is old, resulting in slow water discharge.
Engineers were directed to conduct a technical assessment and prepare a plan to improve drainage capacity, including the installation of hume pipes where required.
Damaged Drain Near Dujra
Near Shriraj Apartment, close to the TCS office in Dujra, officials found a damaged drain and a pit near a chamber.
The commissioner instructed staff to immediately secure the site with warning markers, install temporary hume pipes to maintain drainage flow and fill the pit at the earliest.
Buddha Colony and Kidwai Puri
In Buddha Colony, officials were directed to link drainage chambers on both sides of the road near SK Puri Park Gate No. 8 to improve discharge capacity.
The commissioner also ordered inspection of a chamber near Gate No. 1 and directed the installation of grating and additional hume pipes where necessary.
In Kidwai Puri, a damaged drain was inspected. Officials were instructed to coordinate with the Road Construction Department to facilitate a permanent repair.
Other Areas Inspected
The inspection also covered Nehru Nagar, the Planetarium area and several other locations. Officials reviewed drainage arrangements and issued directions aimed at ensuring faster water discharge during periods of heavy rainfall.
PMC said field inspections and monitoring will continue through the monsoon season to address waterlogging concerns and improve drainage efficiency across the city.
