Patna: Patna Municipal Corporation has begun issuing digital challans to vehicles parked in no-parking zones, in a move aimed at tackling growing traffic congestion across the city. The enforcement drive, which began on Saturday, uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to identify offending vehicles, with notices sent directly to the registered mobile numbers of vehicle owners.
A total of 53 challans were issued on the first day of the campaign, based on footage captured on major roads. Officials said the system is designed to operate with minimal human involvement and is part of an effort to regulate uncontrolled parking and ensure smoother traffic flow.
According to the corporation, a challan is generated only after a vehicle is left stationary in a prohibited zone for a short duration. The initiative was launched on instructions from the municipal commissioner, Yashpal Meena, who has called for stricter measures to reduce congestion.
Where ANPR cameras are not installed, challans are being issued based on images captured by surveillance cameras at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). The municipal corporation said that all vehicles found violating parking rules will be penalised without exception.
Monitoring has been intensified on key routes including Nehru Path, Boring Road, Kankarbagh, Raja Bazaar, Exhibition Road, Fraser Road and the Station–Gandhi Maidan stretch. Continuous inspections are underway to prevent unauthorised parking and maintain steady traffic movement.
Officials said the drive will remain active, with further enforcement expected in the coming days.
