Patna: Patna’s district administration has launched a drive to expand access to piped natural gas (PNG), offering new household connections for Rs 500 as it seeks to ease an ongoing shortage of LPG cylinders in the city.
District magistrate Dr Thiyagarajan chaired a meeting with officials from GAIL (India) Limited, directing them to accelerate the rollout of PNG connections in areas where pipeline infrastructure is already in place. The administration said special camps would begin from Friday to facilitate on-the-spot registrations and installations.
On the first day, camps are scheduled across five apartment complexes, with the number expected to increase to 10 on Saturday. Officials said the campaign would continue in phases to maximise coverage and ensure quicker access for residents.
The process for obtaining a connection has been simplified. Applicants need to register using a mobile number and submit Aadhaar and address proof. After paying a nominal fee of Rs 500, a gas meter will be installed immediately, and a pipeline extended to the kitchen to activate supply.
Authorities estimate that around 21,000 households in three existing PNG zones have yet to switch from LPG. The administration has set a target of providing approximately 3,000 new connections each month, aiming for full coverage in the serviced areas.
Demand for PNG has already seen a sharp rise. The number of consumers increased from 29,816 on March 17 to 30,280 within two days, with 464 new households making the transition. Around 90 commercial establishments have also been connected during this period.
Camps are being organised across several localities, including Saguna Mor, Gola Road, RK Puram, RPS Mor, IPS Colony, Ashiana-Digha Road, Friends Colony, AG Colony, Ramnagari and Boring Road.
Officials have urged residents to opt for PNG, citing its uninterrupted supply, lower cost and environmental benefits compared with LPG, as well as improved safety due to the absence of cylinder storage.
