Patna: A police team came under attack while carrying out a warrant-based arrest operation in Nayagaon under Pirbahore police station late Wednesday night. The incident led to stone-pelting and injuries to several police personnel, triggering tension in the area.
The police team had gone to arrest two people identified as Nagina Rai and Manjay Kumar on the basis of warrants. While police managed to detain Manjay Kumar, he allegedly attempted to escape and jumped from a two-storey building.
The situation reportedly escalated after a rumour spread among people at the spot that Manjay Kumar had died in the fall.
Stone-Pelting Begins After Rumour of Suspect’s Death
According to Pirbahore SHO Raj Kumar Singh, the police team was carrying out the arrest operation when Manjay Kumar allegedly tried to flee after being detained.
He reportedly jumped from the second floor of a building while attempting to escape. Following the incident, some people allegedly believed that he had died.
The rumour triggered a protest, with people allegedly becoming aggressive and starting to throw bricks and stones at the police team.
The police personnel were forced to retreat temporarily as the situation became tense. The team could not complete the planned arrest operation at the time.
SI Suffers Head Injury, Other Cops Hurt
Several police personnel were injured in the attack.
Divakar Pandey, in-charge of the Patna University Town Outpost and a sub-inspector, suffered a head injury during the stone-pelting. Other personnel, including Ramesh Kumar and the Additional SHO, also sustained injuries.
The injured personnel were provided medical attention following the incident.
Additional Police Force Deployed in Nayagaon
Following the attack, additional police personnel were deployed in the Nayagaon area to bring the situation under control.
Police presence was increased in the locality, and officers continued monitoring the area to prevent further escalation.
The incident has also prompted police to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and the attempted escape.
FIR Against 14 Named, Around 20 Unidentified People
Police have registered an FIR against 14 named individuals and around 20 unidentified people in connection with the attack.
Police teams are conducting raids at possible locations to trace those named in the case. Investigators are also examining videos and other available evidence to identify the unidentified suspects allegedly involved in the incident.
Police officials said strict action would be taken against those found involved in attacking the police team or obstructing officials in the discharge of their duties.
The investigation and search for the accused are underway.
