Patna: Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Patna on Friday morning, leading to the cave-in of a road near AN College and prompting authorities to divert traffic as a precautionary measure.
The road developed a large sinkhole following continuous rain, forcing officials to suspend vehicular movement on the affected stretch. Traffic has been diverted to alternate routes to ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rainfall in 19 districts of north Bihar on Friday, forecasting light to moderate rain in several areas. In contrast, most parts of south Bihar are expected to witness largely dry weather, with only isolated light showers and cloudy skies.
The weather department has also warned of heavy rainfall between July 25 and July 28 across several districts in north Bihar. On July 28, heavy rain is likely in Patna, Bhojpur, Buxar, Gopalganj, Saran, Vaishali, Siwan, and adjoining districts.
Lightning Claims Four Lives
Rain-related incidents also turned tragic on Thursday as four people died after being struck by lightning in Aurangabad and Buxar districts.
In Aurangabad, Prince Kumar (20), son of Shyam Sundar Paswan, and Jugendra Yadav (47) were killed while working in agricultural fields.
In Buxar, Golu (21) died after being struck by lightning while returning home to Nachap village during overnight rain. In a separate incident, Ramkumar Upadhyay (60) lost his life after lightning struck Ariyanv village under Krishna Brahm police station limits.
Rainfall Pattern Across Bihar
During the last 24 hours, rainfall was recorded in Patna, Nalanda, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur, while districts including Begusarai and Khagaria remained cloudy. Intermittent light rain continued at isolated places in north Bihar.
Despite scattered showers, Aurangabad remained the hottest district, recording a maximum temperature of 36.8°C on Thursday.
Forecast for Friday
According to the IMD, West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Samastipur, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Madhepura, Sheohar, and Saharsa are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, with cloudy conditions expected to persist throughout the day.
In south Bihar, including Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Nawada, Jehanabad, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Sheikhpura, Rohtas, Bhojpur, Buxar, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Arwal, Bhagalpur, Munger, Banka, Jamui, and Khagaria, rainfall activity is expected to remain limited. Only isolated light showers are likely, while humid weather is expected to continue.
Although some parts of Patna received heavy rain on Friday morning, the broader forecast for the capital suggests generally cloudy skies with only isolated showers and continued humidity during the day.
Bihar Still Facing Rainfall Deficit
Despite recent showers, Bihar continues to experience a weak monsoon season. The state has received 267.7 mm of rainfall against the normal 422.6 mm, leaving it with a 37% rainfall deficit so far this monsoon.
Out of Bihar’s 38 districts, 30 have recorded below-normal rainfall, while only Buxar, Vaishali, Lakhisarai, Madhepura, Purnia, Araria, Kishanganj, and Supaul have received normal or above-normal rainfall.
Meteorologists attribute the uneven weather pattern to the absence of a strong monsoon system over the state. Moisture-laden winds are currently favouring north Bihar, resulting in better rainfall activity there, while south Bihar continues to receive limited moisture, leading to humid and largely dry conditions.
