Patna: Thousands of devotees gathered across the city on Thursday as the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath commenced from the ISKCON temple, with Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary inaugurating the procession by pulling the chariot rope and performing the traditional Chhera Pahanra (ceremonial sweeping).

Lord Jagannath, along with Balabhadra and Subhadra, was seated on a 40-foot hydraulic chariot that moved through the designated route amid devotional chants, bhajans and kirtans. Devotees lined the streets to offer prayers and catch a glimpse of the deities.

Rituals Mark the Beginning of the Procession

The celebrations began at 1 pm with special prayers, Maha Aarti and the offering of Mahabhog comprising 108 delicacies. At 2.30 pm, Samrat Choudhary formally flagged off the procession after participating in the traditional rituals.

ISKCON officials welcomed the Chief Minister before the procession began. Devotional music accompanied the chariot as crowds chanted “Jai Jagannath” throughout the route.

Ministers and Public Representatives Participate

Several members of the Bihar government joined the procession, including Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Choudhary, Sports and Industries Minister Shreyasi Singh, and Art and Culture Minister Pramod Chandravanshi.

The ministers and legislators offered prayers and sought the blessings of Lord Jagannath alongside devotees.

Procession Route Decorated With Rangoli and Flowers

The Rath Yatra route was decorated with colourful rangoli designs created by artists from Patna and other parts of India, with contributions from international participants as well, according to organisers.

At multiple locations, devotees showered flowers on the chariot as it passed. Residents gathered along the route with folded hands to offer prayers, creating a festive atmosphere across the city.

Cultural Performances Highlight the Festival

Dance troupes and cultural performers presented episodes from the life of Lord Jagannath during the procession. The event featured continuous bhajans, kirtans, and traditional instruments, including drums, cymbals and conch shells.

The chariot is scheduled to return to the ISKCON temple after completing its designated route.

Rath Yatra Held at Gardanibagh Thakurbari

A separate Rath Yatra was organised for the first time at Gardanibagh Thakurbari, where the Chief Minister, ministers and devotees also participated in religious rituals and offered prayers.

The annual Rath Yatra brought together religious observances, cultural performances and public participation, drawing large crowds from across Patna and reinforcing the festival’s significance in the city’s cultural calendar.
