Patna: Patna, once considered behind in urban cleanliness, is now emerging as a model city with its significant achievements in the Swachhta Survey 2024-25. The Patna Municipal Corporation was honoured at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi for its performance in sanitation and waste management.
Patna has been ranked 21st among 44 cities with a population above 10 lakh, secured 4th place among Ganga towns, and received the prestigious GFC 3 Star rating. The city’s transformation has been driven by its focused implementation of the 3R approach – reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar highlighted that this honour is the result of the relentless efforts of sanitation workers. Patna has utilised its unused vehicles innovatively, converting them into pink toilets, Loo Cafes, Corporation Neer water kiosks, and Meowhall ambulances to provide public convenience.
In the Citizen Feedback category of the survey, Patna achieved 4th rank, underscoring the importance of active public participation. The Municipal Corporation ran extensive campaigns using mobile apps, social media posts, street plays, rallies, and competitions in schools and colleges to build public awareness. Workers went door to door to collect feedback, strengthening citizens’ commitment to keeping their city clean.
A total of 650 public spaces were developed and cleaned by the corporation. Picnics were organised at these locations in collaboration with sanitation workers to boost morale while promoting the message of cleanliness.
Key initiatives include effective door-to-door garbage collection, segregation of dry and wet waste, establishment of composting units, and strengthening of public washroom management. The corporation also implemented schemes like ‘No Littering Zone’, ‘Swachh Garden’, and ‘Sadak Shatru’, under which those caught throwing garbage on roads were marked as ‘road enemies’ and publicly sworn to keep the city clean.
To ensure efficient operations, Patna Municipal Corporation has equipped all 75 wards with high-tech walkie-talkies, joining a select group of Indian cities with smart communication and monitoring systems. The Integrated Control Command Center now connects all sump houses to enable real-time drainage monitoring during the rainy season.
Present at the felicitation ceremony were Secretary of Urban Development and Housing Department Abhay Kumar Singh, Mayor Sita Sahu, Deputy Mayor Reshmi Kumari, members of the Empowered Standing Committee, Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar, Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashish Kumar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ramashish Tiwari, brand ambassador Neetu Navgeet, sanitation workers Sulekha and Manati, and the entire Municipal Corporation team.
