Patna: Seven people, including a relative of the victims, have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of a brother and sister in the Janipur area of Patna, Bihar. The siblings’ bodies were discovered in a house in Nagwan village earlier this week, prompting widespread public outrage and a significant police investigation.
Patna’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Kartikeya Sharma, confirmed the arrests on Friday, stating that the attack appeared to have been carried out by individuals known to the victims’ family. “The crime scene was examined by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, and key evidence, including a cap believed to belong to the assailants, was recovered,” he said. Two suspects were detained based on this evidence and, during interrogation, reportedly revealed crucial details about the crime.
A total of 25 individuals have been questioned so far, with one suspect apprehended while hiding in nearby bushes. Investigators used a combination of dump data, technical surveillance and local intelligence to track down those involved. Local speculation suggests that one of the detained youths’ fathers was the first person contacted by Shobha Devi, the victims’ mother, immediately after the incident.
In response to the murders, protests broke out in Janipur on Friday. All shops in the locality, including those in Ranipur market, were shut as residents, traders, women, and youth gathered in large numbers. The protest led by local MLA Gopal Ravidas called for swift justice, a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victims’ family, and the dismissal of the Janipur police station in-charge.
