Patna: Patna is set for a major expansion of its digital surveillance network, with 650 new CCTV cameras to be installed across 197 additional locations as part of a citywide security and traffic-monitoring upgrade. Patna Smart City Limited (PSCL) said the plan includes several previously uncovered areas and key routes such as the J.P. Ganga Path from Sabhyata Dwar to Didarganj and the new double-decker bridge on Ashoka Rajpath.
The upgrade also aims to strengthen policing at all entry and exit points to the city, creating a continuous surveillance chain. Officials said a proposal for funding has already been submitted and installation will proceed once funds are released.
Authorities believe the enhanced network will significantly aid crime prevention, law and order, and traffic management. Patna currently uses an automated digital challan system, which issues fines based entirely on camera images, without human intervention. Once a violation is detected, a challan is automatically sent to the vehicle owner’s registered mobile number, a system the government says has improved traffic discipline.
PSCL has already installed 3,357 cameras at 415 locations, including:
- 2,602 CCTV surveillance cameras
- 473 Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras
- 150 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras
- 12 Speed Violation Detection (SVD) cameras
- 120 Vehicle Detection and Classification (VDC) cameras
In addition, public address systems have been deployed at 69 locations to broadcast emergency alerts and public information.
Officials say the new expansion will further modernise Patna’s security infrastructure. Automated monitoring, tighter enforcement and real-time data from the expanded camera grid are expected to help curb crime, reduce traffic violations and ease congestion.
The project, they said, marks a decisive shift toward a fully integrated smart surveillance system for the capital.
