Patna: Patna’s power utility has announced plans to install 18 new substations across the city in an effort to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the peak summer months, when demand is forecast to exceed 1,000MW.
The Patna Electric Supply Undertaking (PESU), which manages electricity distribution in urban areas of the capital, said the additional infrastructure would help prevent tripping and breakdowns even at higher consumption levels.
Work on the substations is already under way and is expected to be completed within the next two to three months, ahead of the intense heat typically experienced in May and June.
Dilip Singh, general manager of PESU, said the expansion forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the city’s power network in response to steadily rising demand. Maintenance and upgrade work is being carried out under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a central government initiative aimed at improving the efficiency and financial sustainability of state-run electricity distribution companies.
The new substations are being installed at multiple locations across the city, including Ranipur, Nandalal Chhapra, Kothwan, DPS Mor, areas near Vidyut Bhavan MLA Flats, Bahadurpur, Anand Bazar, Danapur block office, Pahari, Bhagwatipur, Nausa and Bairiya.
Each of the substations will be equipped with two transformers of 10 MVA capacity, increasing the total supply capacity in the PESU area by up to 360 MVA. Patna currently receives electricity through 84 substations.
Officials said the additions are expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of outages during heatwaves, when air-conditioning and cooling demand typically pushes the city’s power consumption to its annual peak.
