Patna: Patna University has released the draft voter list for its upcoming student union elections, revealing that 19,500 students are eligible to vote this year. The elections are scheduled for February 28, with the final voter list to be published on February 10 after a period of corrections and updates.
According to the draft list, Patna Women’s College has the highest number of voters, with 4,500 students, making it the single largest voting bloc within the university. Chief Election Officer Prof Shankar Kumar said the university received voter data from all colleges and postgraduate departments on February 6, marking the start of the electoral preparation process.
Colleges and students have been given three days, from February 7 to 9, to review and correct the voter list. Students whose names are missing can apply for inclusion, while institutions can rectify errors in the records before the list is finalised. University officials said the correction window is crucial to ensure transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process.
Patna Law College has recorded the highest growth in voter numbers, rising from around 500 voters in previous years to 900 this year, indicating increased student enrolment and participation. Other major colleges, including Magadh Mahila College, Patna College and B.N. College, also account for substantial portions of the electorate.
Campaign activity has already begun, with prospective candidates meeting students at Patna Women’s College and Magadh Mahila College. Supporters of various student organisations have started gathering outside campuses, signalling the start of an intense election season in one of India’s oldest universities.
The college-wise draft voter list includes 4,500 voters from postgraduate departments combined, 2,900 from Magadh Mahila College, 2,200 each from Patna College and B.N. College, 1,500 from Patna Science College, and 1,200 from the Commerce College, among others. University authorities said the election process is being conducted in accordance with established norms to ensure a smooth and fair poll.
