Patna: Visitors to Patna Zoo are set to receive a major attraction boost as preparations intensify for the relaunch of the zoo’s toy train service, which has remained suspended for nearly five years.
Zoo authorities have begun work on a fresh plan for the project, with track-laying scheduled to commence in July. Officials said the revived service would feature upgraded safety standards and a more modern design than the previous version.
New 3.5km Narrow-Gauge Track Planned
According to zoo officials, a new narrow-gauge railway track spanning around 3.5km will be laid within the zoo premises.
The construction process is expected to take approximately four to five months. If the project proceeds according to schedule, visitors may once again be able to ride the toy train by the end of 2026.
Battery-Operated Eco-Friendly Train
The zoo administration said the new toy train would be battery-operated and designed as a fully eco-friendly attraction.
Officials stated that the train would include:
- Four modern coaches
- Family-friendly interiors
- Colourful and updated aesthetics aimed at children and tourists
Authorities said the redesigned train experience was intended to enhance visitor engagement during zoo tours.
Rs 15 Crore Project Underway
The total cost of the project has been estimated at approximately Rs 15 crore.
According to officials, the expenditure will cover:
- Construction of new tracks
- Procurement of engine and coaches
- Technical infrastructure and safety upgrades
Zoo authorities said the earlier train service had been suspended because of serious technical and safety concerns associated with the old tracks.
Old Track Had Safety Risks
Officials explained that the previous railway track contained several structural flaws.
In particular, a sharp curve near the giraffe enclosure was considered highly risky because of the possibility of derailment.
Authorities said:
- Sleepers on several stretches had deteriorated
- Tracks had sunk in multiple locations
- Risks of overturning and passenger injury had increased
The train service was ultimately halted on safety grounds.
Experts have now recommended wider and more robust tracks to ensure safer operations under the new system.
Popular Attraction Returning After Long Gap
The toy train had long been one of the most popular attractions at Patna Zoo, particularly among children and families.
Officials believe the relaunch of the upgraded service will significantly improve visitor experience and increase footfall at the zoo once operations resume.
