Patna: Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, popularly known as Patna Zoo, is set to undergo a major upgrade after the state government approved a Rs 10 crore development plan aimed at improving infrastructure and visitor experience.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the zoo’s governing body, where officials outlined a series of projects to modernise facilities and expand amenities.

Infrastructure And Facility Expansion

The plan includes reconstruction of Gates 1 and 2 to integrate ticket counters, entry points, cloakrooms and souvenir shops at a single location, with a focus on better crowd management.

New additions will include:

  • Two food kiosks and a cafeteria near the main parking area
  • Souvenir shops and designated selfie points
  • Toilets, water coolers and improved signage across the campus

Authorities said at least 15 locations will feature upgraded signage to assist visitors.

Eco-Focused Initiatives

Around 150 eco-bins will be installed across the zoo to promote environmental awareness. Plans also include eco-friendly benches and creative installations made from recycled materials, inspired by similar concepts seen in urban parks.

A 100-metre “tree walk” is also proposed, subject to approval from the Central Zoo Authority.

Staffing And Services

Officials approved recruitment for 23 positions to support operations, along with a Rs 2,000 increase in honorarium for daily-wage workers.

To enhance visitor engagement, 16 guides will be deployed within the zoo, with a nominal fee structure set at Rs 10 per visitor.

Push For Modernisation

Anand Kishor, additional chief secretary of the environment and forests department, said the project aims to transform the zoo into a modern, visitor-friendly destination.

“The focus is on improving facilities while creating new attractions that enhance the overall experience,” he said.

Officials said work will begin soon, with the goal of completing the project at the earliest and positioning the zoo as a key recreational and educational hub in the state capital.
