Begusarai: A police team was attacked and fired upon during a raid against illegal liquor dealers in Begusarai on Friday evening, leaving five police personnel injured. The incident occurred near Bhith bridge under the Naula Police Camp area, when officers moved in to arrest those involved in illicit liquor production.
According to police sources, the team led by Naula Police Camp in-charge Akram Khan conducted a raid around 5:30 pm based on a tip-off about illegal liquor activity. Two individuals were apprehended while brewing liquor. However, as police approached the nearby Bhith Toddy Shop with the arrested men, a mob gathered and began pelting stones at the police vehicle, injuring two officers and blocking the road.
Amid the commotion, a bus carrying Central Police Force personnel on election duty reached the spot. The mob then attacked the bus and the accompanying police force with bricks and stones, injuring three Bihar Military Police (BMP) jawans, two female constables, and a watchman.
Witnesses said the liquor dealer’s group opened fire during the attack, prompting the police to respond with five rounds fired in the air to control the situation. One of the bullets reportedly hit a police vest, though no fatal injuries were reported.
Senior officers, including Teghra DSP Krishna Kumar, Virpur Circle Officer Bhai Virendra, Bhagwanpur Police Station in-charge Manoj Kumar Singh, and Teya Outpost in-charge Kumari Nikita Bharti, rushed to the spot with additional reinforcements. The situation was brought under control after an hour of tension.
Four people, including two women, have been detained for questioning. Police said further arrests are likely as investigation continues.
A video of the attack has surfaced, showing the mob assaulting the police team with sticks and bricks. Injured personnel — BMP constables Raju Kumar, Chinku Kumar Singh, and Mintu Kumar, female constables Kajal Kumari and Aarti Kumari, and watchman Ravindra — were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that a large police contingent is now camping in the area under the supervision of the Teghra DSP to prevent any further disturbance. The situation remains tense but under control.
