Patna: The NDA, buoyed by its sweeping win in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, is moving swiftly to form the next government, with Nitish Kumar set to return as chief minister. Alongside the transition, senior BJP politician Prem Kumar has emerged as the likely choice for the post of Assembly Speaker.
Prem Kumar, 70, represents Gaya Town and is among the BJP’s longest-serving legislators. He secured the constituency for the ninth consecutive time, defeating Congress candidate Akhori Omkar Nath Srivastava. His first victory in the Gaya Urban seat came in 1990, and he has held it without interruption for 35 years.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, the RJD and Left groups, have repeatedly attempted to unseat him, mounting concerted campaigns during each election cycle. Despite these efforts, Kumar has consistently held his ground, maintaining his vote margins and consolidating his position as one of the BJP’s most durable figures in the state.
