Patna: Purnia Airport is set for a major expansion after the Airports Authority of India (AAI) initiated the tendering process for a Rs 294 crore passenger terminal, marking the next phase in the airport’s transformation into a regional aviation hub.
The proposed two-storey terminal, spread across around 20,250 square metres, is expected to provide modern passenger amenities and significantly increase the airport’s operational capacity.
According to airport officials, construction is targeted for completion within 18 months.
Modern Terminal Planned With Expanded Capacity
The new terminal will include three aerobridges, 16 check-in counters, upgraded security systems and modern parking facilities.
Officials said departing passengers will be processed from the upper floor, while the expanded apron will be capable of accommodating up to five aircraft simultaneously, allowing the airport to handle higher traffic volumes.
The AAI has begun the tendering process for the first phase of the terminal project.
Airport Eyes Wider Domestic Connectivity
Purnia Airport currently operates scheduled flights to Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, with officials reporting strong passenger demand.
Once the new terminal becomes operational, the airport is expected to add services to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Guwahati, subject to airline and regulatory approvals.
The expansion has also been planned with the possibility of supporting future international operations, officials said.
Boost For Seemanchal And Kosi Regions
The airport’s expansion is expected to improve air connectivity not only for Purnia, but also for neighbouring districts across the Seemanchal, Kosi, Bhagalpur and Khagaria regions, as well as parts of West Bengal and Nepal near the border.
Officials said the upgraded infrastructure would offer faster and more convenient travel for passengers across eastern Bihar.
The airport currently handles around 1,000 passengers each day.
From Temporary Facility To Growing Aviation Hub
The planned terminal represents a significant milestone for an airport that began operations with a porta-cabin terminal only a few years ago.
If completed on schedule and accompanied by expanded flight connectivity, Purnia Airport could emerge as an important aviation gateway for eastern Bihar and the wider eastern India region.
Pink Bus Service Connects Airport To City
To improve last-mile connectivity, a Pink Bus service currently operates between Purnia Airport and the bus stand near RN Sao Chowk. Depending on passenger demand, the service also extends to Purnia Junction in Khushkibagh.
Passengers travelling by private vehicles can continue to access the airport directly, while many arriving from neighbouring districts use the bus service before completing their journey by auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw within the city.
