Patna: Bihar is set to get a taste of luxury rail travel, even without boarding a train. The Indian Railways has announced plans to convert old train coaches into premium restaurants at seven major railway stations across the state, offering an experience akin to the Maharaja Express.
The initiative is taking its first steps at Saharsa station, where an air-conditioned coach restaurant will be installed within the Amrit Bharat Station Bhawan complex. The restaurant will use retired Garib Rath Express coaches, with a seven-year tender already finalised, expected to generate non-fare revenue of Rs 42 lakh for the Railways.
The project is also under consideration for Darbhanga, Samastipur, Raxaul, Narkatiaganj, Motihari, and Bettiah stations. Each restaurant will be housed entirely within a train coach, featuring air-conditioned interiors designed in a royal theme. Visitors will be able to enjoy video presentations highlighting Bihar’s landmarks and the historical journey of Indian Railways.
Separate kitchens will cater to vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, with menus featuring local specialties and regional sweets. Free Wi-Fi will also be provided. The Railways aims to offer high-quality dining while creating alternative revenue streams, promising a unique and memorable experience distinct from conventional market eateries.
