Railways Team Up with IIT Patna to Fix Waterlogging at Muzaffarpur

Railways join hands with IIT Patna to find a lasting solution for Muzaffarpur Junction’s waterlogging troubles

Muzaffarpur: Passengers at Muzaffarpur railway junction may soon get relief from the problem of waterlogging that has troubled the area for years. Indian Railways has taken a special initiative by seeking help from IIT Patna to solve this issue. The East Central Railway, Sonpur division, will work with experts from IIT Patna to prepare a scientific solution for the drainage problem.

A team from IIT Patna, led by Dr Om Prakash from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is studying the problem in detail. The team has already reviewed the documents and photos shared by the railways earlier. Now, they have asked for more technical information to understand the drainage system better. This includes the slope of drains, drainage capacity, reverse level of drainage branches, and details about the height of the station area.

The IIT team is also looking into the structures built under the Smart City scheme that may affect the drainage flow near the junction. The Municipal Corporation is providing all this technical data to the railways so it can be shared with the IIT team quickly. This will help the experts come up with the most effective plan.

IIT Patna has proposed a budget of Rs 40.52 lakh for this project. This amount will be used for human resources, software, high-resolution satellite data, and other technical resources needed for the study. With this initiative, railways aim to solve the waterlogging problem in a scientific manner and provide hassle-free travel to passengers during the rainy season.
