Patna: The Bihar government has unveiled plans to transform the Rajdhani Jalashay (reservoir) into an eco-tourism destination and biodiversity conservation hub, with construction work expected to begin shortly following the completion of the tendering process.
The project, which will be implemented by the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, is scheduled for completion by October and will focus on beautification, habitat conservation and environmental education.
Officials said the initiative seeks to develop the reservoir into an eco-sensitive zone while enhancing its role as a refuge for local and migratory bird species.
Focus On Biodiversity Conservation
Piyush Baranwal, Divisional Forest Officer of the Patna Park Division, told reporters that the project is designed to establish the Rajdhani Reservoir as a centre for biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness.
Alongside infrastructure improvements and landscape enhancement, efforts will be made to create a safer and more sustainable habitat for birds, with the goal of increasing both species diversity and population numbers.
The reservoir currently supports around 35 bird species, including the Lesser Whistling Duck, Common Moorhen, Common Coot, Gadwall and Comb Duck.
Officials hope the conservation measures will strengthen the wetland’s ecological significance and attract a greater variety of migratory birds in the coming years.
Interpretation Centre Planned
A major component of the project will be the creation of a modern interpretation centre aimed at educating visitors about forests, wetlands, wildlife and ecosystems.
The facility will provide children, students and tourists with information about local biodiversity and the ecological importance of wetlands.
Visitors will be able to learn about bird species found in the region, their habitats, migratory patterns and life cycles through a range of interactive exhibits.

High-Tech Visitor Experience
According to project details, the interpretation centre will feature advanced digital and interactive learning tools.
The facility will include five large information panels and four dioramas and murals showcasing national and state animals and birds, as well as species such as gharials and dolphins and the ecosystems they inhabit.
Plans also include five multi-sensory exhibits incorporating bird-call stations, light-based interactions and a holographic book.
In addition, visitors will have access to a 12-seat 7D experience theatre, augmented and virtual reality systems equipped with three headsets, and a 360-degree immersive room designed to simulate a forest environment.
Interactive kiosks and outdoor educational signage will also be installed across the site.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism
Officials said the project is intended to balance tourism development with ecological protection, positioning the Rajdhani Reservoir as a model for sustainable urban wetland management.
By combining conservation initiatives with educational and recreational facilities, the government hopes to create a destination that encourages public engagement with nature while strengthening awareness of environmental issues.
The project is expected to enhance the reservoir’s appeal as a recreational site for residents and visitors while reinforcing its role as an important ecological asset for the city.
